In December of 2016, officers of the Federalsburg Police Department were contacted by a minor female in regards to a suspect being in possession of what the minor believed to be child pornography.  A formal interview of the minor led to more facts coming to light.

The suspect in question, Dain Zeleny, (DOB 07/11/1987) a registered sex offender was participating in interactions and communications with the minor female and other minors in the community via social media networks. He would request nude images of the children involved in this matter. The minor female indicated she was touched inappropriately by the Defendant. Based on that report Zeleny was apprehended on December 30, 2016.

The Department of Social Services became involved after the victim’s disclosure. A forensic interview with the victim was conducted and she further revealed that Mr. Zeleny purchased alcohol and supplied her with it. He drove her to a secluded area gave her more alcohol and they later engaged in sexual contact that supported a conviction for third degree sex offense.

Mr. Zeleny in June of 2017 entered a plea of guilty to third degree sex offense in relation to the minor victim (the most serious charge that Mr. Zeleny was charged with). The Defendant was sentenced to a maximum sentence of 10 years.

The State’s Attorney’s Office wants to thank the agencies that participated in this investigation that led to this sentence. This should be a call to all parents in our community that we need to closely monitor our children’s interactions online. Messages, profiles, and pictures are shared for the entire world to see. These are not items that are kept in close confidence like a diary. Predators like the Defendant, feast on the naivety of children and the expanded capacity for interactions that social media provides. We must remain ever aware of the dangers that are out there.
