Bleeding Control Kits Installed in Caroline County Public Schools

The Caroline County Health Department is pleased to announce the purchase of Public Access Bleeding Control Kits for local public schools.

Installing the kits is a proactive approach to emergency preparedness and the “Stop the Bleed” campaign, that was launched in October 2015 by the White House.  It is basically intended to encourage “bystanders to become trained, equipped, and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.”

The Health Department has purchased bleeding control kits for all 10 public schools in Caroline County.  They have been installed and co-located by the existing AEDs.  Ryan Todd, Division Chief, Emergency Medical Services has provided training to all the school nurses and administrators.

“The No. 1 cause of preventable trauma death is uncontrolled bleeding,” said Scott T. LeRoy, Caroline County Health Officer.  “The purpose of “Stop the Bleed” is to prepare people to stop serious bleeding in an emergency — just as people commonly perform CPR. Simple instructions are available to anyone on the web at https://www.dhs.gov/stopthebleed.”

“Having school staff and other members of the community trained and equipped to serve as immediate responders in these critical situations will be truly life-saving” said Jon R. Krohmer, MD, Caroline County Department of Emergency Services Medical Director. “The Health Department and school systems are to be complimented for initiating this program. Caroline County DES is proud to be partnering with them.”

In a traumatic event, losing a lot of blood before the professionals arrive is a major cause of death.  This could be preventable with the proper equipment and trained personnel.  If one life is saved, it makes it all worth it.  The Health Department is working with the Department of Emergency Services and is planning to purchase additional kits for installation in county buildings.
