(Federalsburg, MD) – On Friday, November 24, 2017, at approximately 2:25 pm, a Deputy with the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office was patrolling in the area of Maple Avenue and Railroad Avenue in Preston. At that time, the Deputy observed a vehicle traveling east on Railroad Avenue at a high rate of speed. The vehicle failed to stop at the intersection that was posted with a stop sign. The Deputy, operating a marked patrol vehicle, activated his emergency equipment in an effort to initiate a traffic stop on the violator’s vehicle. The operator failed to stop for the Deputy and fled from the Town of Preston onto county roads.

While on Friendship Road, the Deputy briefly lost sight of the fleeing vehicle just prior to Grove Road. As the Deputy approached the area, he found that the vehicle had crashed in a horse pasture on the south side of the roadway. The operator, and sole occupant, identified as Daniel Joseph Patton (49) of Federalsburg MD, was found to have been ejected from the vehicle during the accident.

The Deputy immediately called for a response from Fire and EMS. He exited his vehicle and rendered appropriate medical care to the operator while awaiting paramedics. The operator was flown via MSP Aviation Division to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore where he later died as a result of his injuries. The Maryland State Police CRASH Team is handling the investigation of the traffic accident.
