Don Mulrine, Denton town administrator speaks to The Star Democrat about the Denton Plaza new businesses. Mulrine said Rite Aid, Dollar Tree, Petco and a number of other stores are set to open early next year. Mulrine says: “We think it’s a great community,”  “If you build it, they will come.”  Mulrine also says: “What we’re dealing with is a marketing strategy that doesn’t have the belly buttons,”  “We’re still, no matter what it says, 32,000 people. Anyone coming in is taking a risk.”  It looks like Kohl’s, Target or New Restaurants will not be coming to the Denton Plaza.

8 months ago The Caroline Circle submitted the draw up below

in order to let residents know what proposed businesses may be coming.

What about restaurants or a sports bar? AlI we have in Denton is the Public House. Denton has one of if not the highest taxes of any town in Caroline County which pays the town administrator salary. What are these guys doing? We will never know what other businesses offered to come here and got shot down by these town and county officials, just to protect and scratch each others back.

They need to start doing their job instead of walking around town everyday trying to look important!

    • James says:

Well, we have more than The Public House as restaurants, we have the following:
Sal’s, Cohee’s, Route 404 not to mention Burger King, McDonalds, Domino’s…

      • Local says:

Are you kidding me… Of course we have more than one restaurant that’s apparent. Like everyone else talking about needing more restaurants such as Applebees, Olive Garden, Green Turtle, Big Bats ect… The Public House was mentioned as a standard of the type of restaurants we need more of. WOW… Burger King and McDonalds LOL!

      • Mike says:

Folks seem to forget that the Choptank Grille at Caroline Golf (formerly the Caroline Country Club)is open to the public…and serves very good food. Give it a try. In fact, the entire Caroline Golf/Choptank Grille is open to the public.

    • Local says:

I agree with You, sorry but nobody really cares about fast food, we need more sit down and relax restaurants. Something that families can enjoy, and we need more to do or more places to shop and a new hardware store. There is so much room in Denton but nobody ever wants to buy anything these days, I wish I had the money, because if I did, Denton would change a lot and I’d add stuff so people could have more to do here.

  2. Irma Marshall says:

We need an Applebee’s, Chik-fi-la or Bob Evans!

  3. Shannon says:

I would like to see something done with getting in and out of the parking lot. Its very inconvenient the way it is set up now.

  4. Teresa says:

really? Peebles? God I hope not, please get a nicer store like Kohl’s, JC Penny’s, Tj Max or Marshall’s. If your gonna do please do it right! And I agree we need way more restaurants. Do you people not realize how much money is lost to Easton and Dover cuz we have nothing here to do? No restaurants or shops! Come on Denton we are counting on you!

  5. Jen says:

SAME OLD CRAP…I’ll still be spending my Greensboro dollars in Talbot Co., Annapolis, and Delaware. SMH!

  6. Beth says:

I would love to see a Steak ‘n Shake-something different from what every one else has! A Cici’s pizza would be nice, too. Not too expensive and places that welcome families at very affordable prices.

I agree, not a Peebles. In 25 years on the shore, I go in to Easton’s every 2-3 years and have never bought anything! The one is Easton has always been empty (during my few visits) and I don’t think it would survive for long in Denton.

  7. joy says:

I think that the Peebles is horrible idea. I have agree at Marshalls or TJ Max would be more successful. We do need some familiar restauranta like a longhorn steak house or buffalo wild wings! A sweet frog would be nice as well!

  8. Robin Martin says:

Why not a movie theatre and a restaurant or two? There is nothing for people to do here. It’s a real shame

  9. Steve says:

Looks like we will still have to continue to shop amd eat is Easton ….crazy. You have to wonder who is responsible for approving this. They are obviously out of touch with the needs of the community.

  10. Joshua says:

how about a movie theater instead of Peebles, a GNC, a Lowes, chipotle, Why do we need another rite aid? and no one needs a peebles. Lets do something so the area kids can have a place to hang out without going to Dover, Salisbury, or Across the bridge.

  11. Tina says:

I don’t want a peebles. I have never shopped there and probably never will. If your going to bring in a clothing store than make it like a Kohls or TJ Maxx or Marshals. We need a place to eat so bad. How about an Ihop, applebees or friendly’s. All those are cheap and offer alot of options. Give us something to keep us here and not in Easton, Annapolis or Dover.

  12. Kelly says:

Please no Peebles ! I love Sals and The Pub but we need another restaurant preferably a chain. I love my pet but there is nothing I would go to petco for when Walmart is right there.

  13. Kenny says:

WOW! That is some nerve. “If you build it, they will come.” So he is saying what ever crap comes here, don’t worry they will still come and spend their hard earned money. Get these people out of these positions. Also instead of complaining just remember this crap come November election time!

  14. Bill S. says:

I am pretty sure what is meant by ” “If you build it, they will come.” is that if you build the space, retailers will come to fill the spots. Maybe an adult learning center is needed in one of those spots.

    • Kenny says:

Nice dig Bill about the adult learning center, sadly this is the problem with our officials and people like you thinking that Caroline County residents are stupid. Thanks for sharing how you feel about us.

      • Bill S. says:

I live here too Kenny. I certainly don’t think the comments made here are representative of Caroline County residents on a whole. I also don’t support all the actions or views of our elected officials. However, I do feel that this is one of the few projects underway in Caroline County that has potential to move the area forward by bringing in new business, whatever those businesses might be. I would think we are in agreement on that one.

    • zumkatze says:

No, Kenny, your premise (and and not so subtle ad hominem)is incorrect. Just because it’s built doesn’t mean a thing! Example… store fronts downtown are built and look at them. Mostly empty!
Any business worth their salt will survey the economics and demographics of an area they wish to locate. If it looks like they’ll make a profit, they’ll take a chance. If not… they won’t. It doesn’t matter one bit that there is a building there for them to move in to. If necessary, they’ll build their own.
WalMart must be dying right about now because of this new “philosophy”. When they first proposed to come here, there were a large amount of growth projects in the plans. They pulled the trigger on those plans. The current (and recent)crop of Commissioners got elected Clendaniel, Danielson, Gregory for example, and pulled the rug right out from under them.
And what is meant by this “belly buttons” comment? With people like this in leadership positions, it’s no wonder Denton is hitting the skids again.

      • Kenny says:

I agree that’s why I said that’s some nerve to make that statement. Don Mulrine, Denton town administrator made the statement: “If you build it, they will come.”

He also made the statement: “What we’re dealing with is a marketing strategy that doesn’t have the belly buttons,”

People need remember these leaders that are not doing what we want and when November election time comes get out and VOTE!

        • zumkatze says:

I need to do a mea culpa, Kenny. I meant to address this to Bill S., not you. You and I are on the same page.
Elections do have consequences. Unfortunately, the town elections seem to be more of a popularity contest rather than on the issues.

  15. Melissa says:

I would like to see a kohls, a peebles, a good place to eat like an Applebee’s, or chipotle. Even a sams club would be nice

  16. Margie says:

NO Peebles!! Who really shops there? How about a Boscov’s?? DEFINITELY NEED restaurants!! Mexican, steakhouse and a good breakfast place. Petco is expensive so we’ll continue to buy our pets products from Walmart. Love that Dollar General is coming but do we really need another pharmacy!! Sadly it sounds like our Ridgely dollars will still go to Dover and/or Annapolis.

  17. Georgia says:

I agree that Peebles is a very bad idea. I think they should put in something that we do not have locally. I love Kohls but there is one in Easton. I would love to see a Boscov’s, TJ Max, Marshalls, or how about Home Goods? We also need a steakhouse and somewhere to get breakfast.

I am just trying to think of places that I go to Dover, Annapolis, and Salisbury to shop and eat.

  18. Tara and Amanda says:

As young adults we would like to see more places to eat and shop (not peebles). We also need something to do, movie theater, sports bars. We need to mirror Easton with their variety. More ethnic restaurants, a sneaker store. Something to appeal to the younger generation who are working and living here and raising our kids here.

  19. james says:

i would love to see a buffalo wild wings a footlocker king buffet

  20. another young adult says:

As another young adult, I would appreciate something other than fast food, a place to shop other than walmart, and something recreational- bowling, movies, something! The last thing this town needs is another dead-end chain like Peebles. Another place to have a few drinks is also needed- there’s the pub which has its own crowd (and isn’t really accepting to others) and biker bars– nothing for young people.

  21. zumkatze says:

Wow! Things sure have gone downhill since I was a Planning Commissioner. Peebles? SMH… There were big plans back then for this area and it didn’t look anything like this. But that was when, for a brief period, there was real leadership in the town. I sure miss Brad Horsey and the Town Council from those days. And the other town positions were staffed with visionary people who wanted to move things forward. Now we have the same tired go-alongs who want to return Denton to a one-horse town. It’s sad to see. At least we got WalMart here before this current crop shut the door.

    • Lee says:

You consider Wal-Mart to be a good thing?? What a joke! I do agree that Peebles is a bad choice. Like others who have posted here, I also think a Marshall’s or T.J. Maxx would be wonderful since there aren’t any for miles. Wal-Mart was the addition that made me shake my head and wonder at the intelligence of the Town Council and Planning people! Nothing like plotting to put all of the local small businesses out of business!! Won’t be long before the Food Lion goes under courtesy of Wal-Mart as well…

  22. Donna says:

Really Peebles…!!!!!, guess it’s time to move out of Caroline County since I spend most of my time in DE, and Talbot County shopping!!!

  23. rayray says:

Better options for a young adult crowd and families is definitely needed here! People will continue to go to Dover, Easton, Salisbury and Annapolis because they have the variety that we do not have in Caroline County. Just look at the $$$ being spent somewhere else. A bowling alley, movie theater, or sports bar would be nice!! Why move in another dollar store or Rite Aid….what about a Walgreens or CVS. A Michaels Arts & Craft or AC Moore. What about a Sams Club or Lowes Hardware. There really is so much that Caroline County could do to move forward and get on the map!

  24. Em says:

    CHIPOTLE!!!…Marshalls or TGmax…chic fila…or other chain restaurant….

  25. Dagwood says:

Please, we don’t need no stinkin’ Peebles. And getting other big box stores won’t be easy. They do market research and Denton is too small for most of them. Same for national restaurant chains. Btw, Rite Aid is moving from across the highway so there won’t be two of them here.

Family Dollar opened in Greensboro and seems to be doing well so maybe a Dollar Tree will work here. While I’d love a good breakfast place, they don’t seem to thrive in Denton. Sunday mornings at Caroline Golf is about the only real restaurant breakfast I can get. It’s good and reasonably priced and they also have a nice bar, reasonably good food and a comfortable setting on other days of the week. And, don’t forget Harry’s. Check out the Tavern menu.

Movies don’t do well in small towns and neither do bowling alleys. A Mexican restaurant would be great and would probably do very well. Do we really need another auto store? Or Petco? Would Panera Bread come in or something like it? We really need a good sandwich spot since the Lily Pad has closed.

  26. JenT says:

I honestly feel Peebles wont make it even a year in Denton. Maybe they should have looked at the average income of people in Caroline County before putting a over priced store in it. Def should have did a survey “how many people drive to Easton Peebles”

  27. Ashley says:

I agree there is nothing to do here we definitely need to build it up! a buffalo wild wings, Marshall’s some type of restaurant/bar and somewhere to shop would be awesome!!
